How Boredom will improve your life?

Act 1

Me - Crap, I’m bored! (says irritably)

My mind - Ok, You literally have drawing, painting, reading, writing and 99 other hobbies, that you could be doing right now.

Me - I know…..I know…..but I’m just bored.
May be I should just…..scroll through Instagram or something.

My mind - Oooooh! Dear please don’t, just wait..wait..wait

Me - frantically *pulls out phone and opens instagram*

My mind -  Aaaaah! You……bitch!

End of Act 1.

Have you ever felt
  • excruciatingly restless in your own body and mind,
  • you felt like you had nothing to do,
  • whatever you were doing felt meaningless,
  • you felt an unbearable and unpleasant sensation surging through your body.
So, to distract yourself, you picked up your phone and started scrolling through Instagram. You refreshed your feed 6-7 times and now it feels more toxic than entertaining. So does that damn Mobile game you have been addicted to in the past weeks. You are neither being fully entertained nor are you feeling fully bored. All you feel is empty and miserable.

Sucks…doesn’t it?

This insanely miserable sensation that you were feeling was nothing else but - Boredom.

Humans usually tend to take boredom very lightly, like it’s some inconsequential phase, that arrives just once in a while, makes us feel dejected and then….. just passes away! And yet when it hits us, there we are back in the wonderland of misery and restlessness.

Learning to deal with boredom effectively is actually one skill that all of us need in life. Because no matter how interesting your life seems right now, boredom is always already on its way to catch you off guard and hand you your ass.

Steve Jobs once said -“I'm a big believer in boredomBoredom allows one to indulge in curiosity, and out of curiosity comes everything.”

And he couldn’t be more on point.

This might catch you by surprise (or not) but,
  • when you feel bored a space is created in your mind,
  • in this space your mind is free, as it should always be but it doesn’t usually happen, when we are treading through our day to day gruelling schedules,
  • your mind is free to wonder, and imagine and think,
  • all of this will breed curiosity, which in turn will breed creativity.

And as Sadhguru says in his book Inner Engineering - “The only true sign of intelligence is that you are constantly wondering.”

Boredom is actually very healthy for you. If you listen closely to your body and mind, boredom is their way of asking you to change your current state.

They ensure that you don’t get caught up in the same mundane lifestyle. After all you aren’t a Robot.

Boredom, in reality keeps you truly “alive” in spirit.

Just imagine the next time you get bored, you don’t reach out to any person or social media or Netflix. You might end up experimenting with something and having a new hobby or a great idea.

That small and precious window of Boredom, if handled well and effectively, has the power to change all of our lives. It might lead you on an entirely new and unexpected path.

Now how sweet would that be !

If every human alive today learned to handle their boredom more efficiently and productively, Netflix, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube and the rest of the “Instant Gratification Industry”….. man are they collapse or what!

Now, I get it, it’s not easy.

It’s gonna be painful in the beginning and will involve shit ton of effort. But *cliche mode on* nothing worth having ever comes easy.

You won’t ever truly “Explore Yourself”, or live a truly fulfilling life, if you don’t have the discipline to handle boredom effectively.

So for Satan’s sake, the next time it arrives………….. just get bored.
